Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Francis R. Fannon returned to Abu Dhabi January 8 to 13, to discuss regional energy security and cooperation with government, business and civil society leaders.  There he led the U.S. delegation at the assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Atlantic Council Global Energy forum.The purpose of Assistant Secretary Fannon’s trip was to demonstrate continued U.S. partnership in the region and to reassure global energy markets.  In returning to the United Arab Emirates multiple times in the past year, Assistant Secretary Fannon seeks to leverage new U.S. energy abundance to support partnerships in the face of regional challenges to political stability.Assistant Secretary Fannon outlined the new resilience of energy markets resulting from the United States having become a net energy exporter.  The United States is  the number one energy producer in the world, on track to produce over 13 million barrels of crude oil per day in 2020.The United States is committed to stability in global energy markets and continues to engage in the shared pursuit of energy transformations, including growth in renewable energy, based on mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities.  The U.S. Energy Resource Governance Initiative (ERGI), is one such opportunity that Assistant Secretary Fannon promoted on his visit, as he continues to advocate for sound mining sector governance and resilient energy mineral supply chains.
